Your Say
December 2003
Wilbert Savoy got me onto this site. I was born in Alberta
but raised in the Miramichi, all the rest of my family were born there. I live in Alberta but have fond memorie of back home.
I was home in 2002 and had a wonderful time at an Injin town reunion on Mitchell Street, saw a lot of familiar faces, hope
to be at the next reunion. I really like this site.

Dear Editor,
I live in Brazil and have received your paper frequently on the Net.
I would like to thank you all and also to congratulate for the lovely piece of information you write. I have friends from
Miramichi.
All the best to the team.
Yours,
Tony Pignaton
What a treat it is to come into work and find Bread 'n Molasses
in my Mail box.. There is a very popular Family run Restaurant here in The Valley that serves fresh homemade bread
instead of "store bought ". When I first started going there I would ask the waitress for some Molasses for my toast....I always
got the frowning eyebrows staring back at me. ..As time passed the owner approached me and asked me if I was from The East
Coast. I answered yes, but more importantly, I am from The Miramichi. I don't even have to ask anymore. As soon
as the girls see me come in, I have my glass of ice, can of Pepsi and my serving of Molasses put down right in front of
me.....I am so PROUD to be a Miramichier, I can't even tell you...... Thanks so much for keeping me in touch with home....... Nancy

I always enjoy your email and it helps me keep in touch with the Miramichi.
Hope to return and retire on the Miramichi in a few short years. Keep up the good work,
former resident John Gillis (Red Bank) now Vancouver BC.
PS very few Tim Horton's out here, oh well, their loss.
Hi, just logged onto this site. Love it - very entertaining; a little
of my Miramichi which I have been away from for many years but never forget. Keep up the great work--- Mary
Just wanted you to know that my nephew who is stationed in Germany with
AWAC sent me this site tonight. I never knew it existed and I am from the Miramichi originally and I am really enjoying it.
Keep up the excellent work ! Really enjoyed this issue since this is my first time here, and it sure brought back memories
of what we did on Halloween back in the fifties and sixties! Those were the good days! Keep up the excellent work and just
love those recipes!

JUST LOVE YOUR SITE. Keep it up, you are all great. Keep up the good work. From an old folk from the GREAT MIRAMICHI
area,

Dear Editor of Bread ‘n Molasses,
Let me start by saying this is a most unique site! It is very "down to earth" and therefore very appealing. Thank you
so much for starting Bread ‘n Molasses. I have an idea that maybe some one would like to take and "run" with if you
please? How about a section on the "Old Timers of The Miramichi?" Where as I am a Genealogy nut I thought it would be interesting
to know who were the first settlers of the Miramichi? There names, any descendants living today? What were their contributions
to the Miramichi and surrounding are? etc. It is just an idea. Thank you for your time.
-- Frank (Matchett) Springer. {Formally from Chatham, N.B.)
(Editor’s Note:
Great idea, Frank! So, how about it, Miramichiers? Any volunteers to “run” with this project? We’d love
to be able to publish a regular feature about the “Old Timers of the Miramichi.” Email me and let me know.)
I love your newsletters. Miramichi
is such a beautiful place. The pictures you take are of a place I could only dream of. I live in Texas. It is beautiful too
with Lot of Lakes. But I have to say Miramichi looks so fresh and clean. Thank you very much for the pictures and newsletter.

Congratulations to Pauline Underhill on a job so well done, on her story about Roseen Underhill and the Mountain School
she attended. Pauline is very talented, she certainly can write an interesting story and bring it to life. Every detail of
the school was exactly as I remember it and it was a nice tribute to Roseen.

Recently visited the Miramichi and was amazed at how little signage there is
in the city. It is fine if you know the place but if you are from out of town it isn't easy getting through your city. It was nice to be back on the Miramichi despite the many changes that have occurred over
the past 11 years. Miramichiers are always the same - friendly and happy.

Re: The Day We Went to Neguac
Golly, from down here in South Louisiana, (U.S.A.) it sounds as though you were living in heaven for that one day.
The writing was superb. I was able to picture the whole thing in my head just from your words. If I hadn't already eaten my
final meal of the day (we call it supper here) I couldn't have eaten a bite anyway. I was full just from reading about your
eats. I'm sure if all of that was in and around Miramichi you folks must live in a paradise and have the best people around
for neighbors.
Congratulations on your writing, on being able to enjoy life so much, and for being amongst such wonderful people.
My fondest wish would be to go there for a visit, but since I'm sort of "Old Folk" I guess that just won't happen. Your writings
are the next best thing - along with the times when I hear from Joan Cripps. I admire that lady! Oh, and what a great photographer
you two are! Keep it up, and I'll keep reading and enjoying. Good luck to all.

Greetings from Ardrossan Alberta,
one heck of a long way from the Miramichi! I spent a good many years on Mitchell Street in Newcastle, Injuntown as it was
called once upon a time. I now reside in Alberta but find that my heart is still on the River. Thanks so much for putting
this great piece of work together! I read it faithfully and always feel closer to home when I do. Someday I hope to live back
"home" but for now I have to be content with a visit every few years. Best wishes to all of my former neighbors, new and old
friends and my family still residing in the Miramichi.

For the last 42 years I always
look forward to going to the Miramichi Digging Clams, a feed of Smelts and most all Lobsters. And meeting the people on the
street, as they roar out to you HOW SHE GOING BOY, Ha.Ha. Got me all choke up now. Miss you and love you all and may God bless

Hello, just been talking with a friend and confidant, he told
me he got bread and molasses, so I asked him to toast mine. Well, I guess I gave him the sense of the ha-ha’s. He explained
to me what this was and emailed it to me . . . What a magazine . . . I must congratulate you and your staff. I only wish someone
would do the same here in Kingston or the rural country outside of Ottawa, where I’m from and will be returning - Hammond,
Ontario. How do I subscribe to your most informative magazine that I ever had the pleasure to view in a long time? My hat
is tipped to you and staff!!
Thank You Kevin Gallan for this gift.

Just a great
site to enjoy, Love it. Joan Cripps got me on it. Thank You all.

I appreciate you reminding
me of where I came from, although I will never forget. J I guess that is what the mystical part of the Miramichi does to us. You gave me a smile. Thanks and have a great day.
Oh and by the way I hate molassis, see that is how much I hate it — I can’t even spell it right. Take care and
smile, you deserve it. --Mary Susan Gregan

"I read the article called Her Name Was Roseen. It sure brought
back many memories to me as Roseen was my oldest sister and I certainly looked up to her. How we miss her and often talk about
the tricks she used to play on us. --Marjorie Walls
"So glad to receive a copy; and always find anything connected to the
Miramichi very interesting." -- Diane Garinger, Los Angeles CA
"What a nice article on Marjorie's Gift Shop.I have known Marjorie for
almost her entire lifetime, and she deserves all the nice things you said about her. She is a very special person and her relationship
with her customers is second to none.
Marjorie is also to be admired for the sacrifices she makes in caring for
her dear Mother. Although I am not a frequent visitor to her lovely shop, I know that the article paints a true picture of
how she handles her business. Congratulations to Marjorie and Best Wishes for many more years of success in your Gift Shop!" -- Dorothy Creighton

"Who would have ever believed that Bread 'n Molasses would be a web page
and be cool? It's a nice site, and a lot of good work has gone into it. I like your page and I am sure most transported down-homers
are going to love it."
-- Margaret, Saint John
"Just finished reading through some of the "Bread 'n Molasses" website
and am really impressed by it, in particular the article "Her Name Was Roseen" - a very touching, well-written tribute to
a childhood friend." -- Anne Walker
"I was very impressed with your site. Keep up the good work." -- Wendy Astle
"When I Was A Young Lad contained a true story entitled 'Her Name Was
Roseen.' I had never heard this story until now. When I read it I wanted to cry for a girl I never knew, or ever will know.
But more than that, it made me cry for my Mother who lost her friend. I am proud to say that my Mom is Pauline Underhill,
the author. I would like to congratulate her on doing such a fine job and for sharing such an emotional story with us all."
-- Jennifer Keenan
"Congratulations on your Miramichi Room! It is so warm and user friendly
and exemplifies what we Miramichiers truly are. Keep them coming." --
Susan Butler
"What a surprise and a good one at that. Although, I am not a real
Miramichier by birth, I am one at heart. Your interesting article brought back memory - the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel and a certain
intelligent woman reading the Cosmopolitan. Good time it was." --
Edith Boudreau
"Your Miramichi Room is great. I think we all need to be reminded that
we are not just a "hole in the wall community" and we have some great things to celebrate and remember. There are so many
great things here. And to hear that from me (someone who could never imagine ever returning to the Miramichi), is really hard
to believe." -- Jennifer Mitchell
"I received a copy of Bread 'n Molasses in my morning's email and read
it from "stem to stern." It sure made me 'homesick' for my second home. I just loved THE PURPLE HAT LADIES TEA SOCIETY. I'll
have to see if I can find a fancy purple hat this spring so I will be all set to join when I get up to the Miramichi this
summer. God Bless you and yours." -- Dona Atcheson

The Editor: Congratulations on your debut issue of Bread n' Molasses!
It is great to see something that celebrates our area and the talents of its people. I especially enjoyed the poetry section
and would love to see some more local artists get the exposure they deserve. I sent copies to family members who live away
and suggest others do the same. Can't wait to see what is in the next issue! - classygal
