| Bear & Lorraine -- "The Tinkers" |
October 2003
**Editor’s Note: In July, Bread
‘n Molasses introduced you to Bear and Lorraine, the tinkers who spent the Irish Festival weekend in Chatham. We’ve
received more email in response to that story than any other we’ve published. It seems Bear and Lorraine have made friends
all over and everyone wants to wish them well. Most recently we received this email from Shirlee:
"I am looking to get this mailing to Lorraine. I am a relative
in the U.S. and would like to talk to her via email. I can share all the details when she responds. Thank you for your time and I am looking forward to her contacting me! Sincerely, Shirlee"
When I received this message I didn’t have any idea how to contact
Lorraine. I only met her and Bear that one day when I interviewed them and I hadn’t thought to get and forwarding address.
I told Shirlee many people have been sending well wishes to them and I would post a Sticky Note in hopes one of our readers
knows how to contact them. Then last week we received this email from Melinda:
Hi! I'm a friend of Bear & Lorraine's. Myself and a friend of mine just got back from visiting them on the Salmon
River. They are in great spirits and are still having a wonderful time. Our visit was majestic in a little cabin nestled beside
the Salmon River. I just wanted you to know that the picture links of them on your website are not working. I would love to
see the pictures. Thanks so much.
Talk about timing! I replied and asked if she could help me contact them. This is what she said:
Hi Kellie, Thanks for your reply. The only contact information I
have for Bear & Lorraine is Bear's sister's mailing address and phone number. They do not have a phone or electricity
or running water I send written mail and correspondence through her. She visits them at least once a week and can pass on
any messages or mail.
And she was kind enough to share the information with me. So, for
all of you who have been wanting to send your best wishes to Bear and Lorraine. I can now forward that information for you.
Send me an email and I’ll do my best.

I am researching both sides
of my family and am in need of information as to where I can get an "employee list" of the J.B. SNOWBALL CO. LTD. My great-grandfather
worked there (JOHN SPRINGER) when he arrived from Belgium.
Thank you for your time and
also a very well done site.
Frank (Matchett) Springer.
**If you have information to help Frank
with his research or anyone else who has posted a Sticky Note send your information to editor@breadnmolasses.com and we’ll pass your email on to the right person.
Prayers for Our Armed Services
Our son Major Dyrald Cross just left for Afghanistan where he will spend
the next six to seven months. God go with Him.
Dyrald graduated from James M. Hill in 1986. He is married to Connie Crossly
from Nova Scotia and has two Darling children. Meghan and Hayden.
Our Son-In-Law, David Bickford from Leamington, Ontario, returned last month
from the Middle East. David is married to our daughter, Tracey Cross, and they have two lovely daughters, Tarina 13, and Kendra.
(Whom by the way was the last baby born to parents serving at CFB Chatham, prior to the closing of the base.)
Our oldest son is Tony Cross who works on the aircraft and is stationed in
Cold Lake, Alberta. Tony is married to Laurie Waller from Fredericton and they have a great son, Garret. We are praying Tony
won’t have to go to the Middle East.
Hope everyone who reads this is sending up a prayer for
those who are involved in this crisis in the Middle East. Everyone needs those prayers!
My husband, Paul, was in the Military for thirty-five years. I was in for
a little less than two years.

HAPPY BELATED 82ND BIRTHDAY to Mary Driscoll on Wednesday July 16, 2003
from her son Leroy, Heather (Stymiest), Amanda and Julia in Mississauga, ON.
We miss you Nanny! from Amanda and Julia.
How wonderful to know all my friends on the Miramichi have the bread
and molasses. I want to talk to some of my dear friends that I left behind. Send me an email kolob@sympatico.ca Diane Savoy (nee Duplessis)
Just what we need, a Bread and Molasses site, and sure brings back many
memories. Just the name Bread and Molasses, yumm. We sure loved eating bread and molasses when we were kids on the Miramichi
and still do. My 2 boys love it and up here in Ontario, people find it strange that you can sit and enjoy a slice of home
made bread and molasses & beans and a nice cup of tea. Anyone out there remember this??
Also would like to know if anyone out there would have any information
or history on the little schoolhouse that was on Regent Street just below the King George Hwy that was rented out to families.
It was owned by the Stothards. What was the name of it and when was built?
Keep up the great work on this site.

Hello,
I am a grad from the JMH class of 78, and wondering if any other fellow
grads might be out there as well. Would be nice to hear what old friends are up to.
Thanks

Memories of my summers spent on the beautiful Miramichi with family &
friends forever bring me peace and longing to be "home". In my memories, there is not a more beautiful sight than the glistening
Miramichi on a summer day. -- John Serenci (Clancy's of #16 Frost Street, Chatham) Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Just like to send a note to thank who ever signed me up for Bread 'n Molasses
. . . very well done . . . makes me very lonesome for sure. -- Kevin Gallan, Fredericton

"Hello!! I think this is a great forum to use to pass on "hello's" to family
and friends. I guess I am no different than anyone else so I would love to say hello to my cousins (father's side) in Chatham,
Valerie (Springer) Sickles and George Springer. Out in the Sunny Corner area (my mother's side) a big hello to Star, Patty,
Kelly and the rest of the Matchett clan. (Too numerous to mention here!) Also to whoever put my name in for a subscription
to Bread 'n Molasses, you have my gratitude. A great newsletter and very timely. Thank you and Happy St. Pat's Day!!" -- Frank (Matchett) Springer, formerly from the Miramichi
"As a former New Brunswicker whose mother was raised in Loggieville,
I would appreciate some information on the Pine Grove Cemetery there - history of the people who are buried there, etc. I
live in the Seattle area now but do manage to get back to the Miramichi yearly - love those Turkey Suppers!" -- Marion Packard
