Ayurveda -- Some Basics

The word Ayurveda is derived from ancient Sanskrit roots, it means ‘Life- knowledge.’ It is considered the most sacred science of life, beneficial to the mind, body and soul.

It is the oldest surviving complete medical system in the world. It’s origins go back nearly 5000 years.

Ayurveda is not simply a health care system, but a lifestyle adopted to maintain balance and wellness. This system is based on the premise that life represents an intelligent co-ordination of the Atma (soul) Mana (mind) Indriya (senses) and Sharira (body) which in turn revolve around the five dense elements (fire, water, air, earth and space.)

According to traditional ayurvedic teaching, there are three basic constitutions or doshas. When your dosha is balanced you can obtain optimal health and well being.

Example, a person who is mainly of the air element or Vata tend to be energetic and creative, but without balance. They feel unorganised, rushed, and restless. They tend not to eat very well. They are usually not on schedule, which can result in stomach and bowel problems, poor skin and an unclear mind.

But there is help through ayurvedic techniques. Aromatherapy, massage and meditation can bring balance back.

Balance is achieved through lifestyle changes. Certain dosha's prefer different aromatherapy. What one oil does for me it may not do for you.

Massage is for everyone. Toxins lay under the skin. Imagine mould and spores in your home, you can live in a house like that for a long time, but eventually it's going to make you sick.

It's the same with the toxins that lay under your skin under the muscle, you need massage just to increase your immune system and for relaxation.
