April was a great month for tourism initiatives. The government of Canada announced
1.9 million dollars for three local projects: French Fort Cove Eco-Centre, Ritchie Wharf and Waterford Green.
The French Fort Cove Eco-Centre was awarded 1.2 million dollars. It also has
commitments of $500,000 from the City of Miramichi and $500,000 from the Province of New Brunswick. Construction is scheduled
to begin in the near future with priority being given to the Eco-Centre.
This multi-purpose Centre will serve as the Eco Gate to Northern New Brunswick.
Using technology like CD-ROMs, from the Centre you will be able to visit cultural and historical sites such as Beaubear's
Island, Wilson's Point, Middle Island, the Augustine Mound, Ritchie Wharf, and Queen Elizabeth Park.
The French Fort Cove Eco-Centre plans to develop an education program where
school children can do their Science Projects within the Cove, bring species back to the Centre and under microscopes study
and research their subject. Eco Tours will be prepared and available upon request.
Folklore will also be available for exploration through CD-ROM technology, including the French Fort Cove Learning Quest -
DARE THE DARK FOR THE HEADLESS NUN!
Interpretative themes and celebrations of Miramichi will be on display in the
Eco-Centre. The building will be home to a new Visitor Information Centre with staff trained to accommodate all travellers'
needs. There will be an Events Registration area, and a technology centre with reservation booking, e-mail and more. It will
also house a first class Gift Shop, fully stocked with local, provincial and native handicrafts.
The area will have a global appeal as a natural wilderness within the City.
We will become the missing link to connect the Miramichi to Kouchibouguac, the Irving Eco-Centre, the Hopewell Rocks, Cape
Enrage and other Eco sites within the Province.
